Tamboti
The lustrous hardwood Tamboti (Spirotachys Africana), commonly called African Sandalwood, is used by the Ju/'hoansi San to create beautifully carved jewelry. The wood has a warm musky fragrance. Skill and artistry go into the design of each unique piece.
Some of the steps in the creation of a piece of Tamboti jewellery are illustrated below.
Artists use a knife to carve a pattern into a strip of tamboti wood.
Each segment will contribute to the design of the finished bracelet.
A bow drill is used to create the holes.
A finished necklace!
