Kathleen Gillis, our Instructor
Every Tuesday beginning January 26, 2010:
Drumming is an activity which builds community, breaks down barriers, and helps people develop common understanding. Rhythm occurs everywhere in life - inside us, outside us, in the movement of commnunities, cultures, and planets. In this general course, students will learn the basics of drumming, but with some twists not found in other classes in the city. All levels are welcome from beginners to experienced. There is something for everyone. This class is meant to be an overview of the mosaic which is the world of drumming. Any of the modules can easily be taken into deeper study at a later time, based on interest level.
The Djembe Drumming class will cover the following concepts:
1
. Drumming Basics
– basic sounds, technique, and drum-maintenance
2. Concepts of circle drumming
– more than “just drums” – building a community rhythm experience using layers of percussion, basic facilitation, guidelines for circle drumming to maximize music and enjoyment for everyone
3
. Culturally specific rhythms
– a whole different thing -- West Africa, Sudan, Sufi, concepts of how to stay musically and professionally respectful of every culture
4. Basics of rhythm
– notation, charts, timing, breaking it down to build it back up
5. Drumming and meditation, drumming for life
– concepts regarding intention, rhythm, dynamics, and speed, drumming and health, divination, using chants with drumming
6. Using everything that we’ve learned –
an open circle and celebration
BIO – Kathleen Gillis
Kathleen started her career as a professional musician in 1978 performing in classical, gospel and musical theater venues. With a passion for percussion, she now appears locally with artists such as Bhadra Collective (goddess-world-rock-blues), Gary Diggins and Friends (new-world- jazz), AnnMarie Boudreau’s Sound Journey Experience (ambient), Michael Moon (pagan-folk-rock-ambient), Michael Franklin (medieval) and others. Her teachers have included grammy-nominated jazz musician and percussionist Waleed Abdulhamid from Sudan, Arthur Hull of “Rhythma-Culture” and “Drum Circle Spirit” fame, Famoudou Konate (former creative director for the Guinea Ballet) and his son Billy. She also performs using other styles such as Persian tonbak and frame-drumming on daf. In some communities she is affectionately known as “Moondrummer.”
